The member of parliament indicated that there are many citizens’ complaints about unofficial increases in the prices of refrigerators, fans, air conditioners and some other electrical appliances, pointing out that many electrical appliance exhibitions increase the price of officially priced products without this being proven by the purchase invoice, as this phenomenon is a true embodiment For the phenomenon of informal economy.

And “Salama” stated that the greed of some merchants is a major factor in the spread of this phenomenon, and that some merchants monopolizing certain types of electrical appliances in violation of the laws and without supervision from the concerned devices is the real reason behind the spread of this phenomenon.

She referred to the text of Article 4 of Law 181 of 2018 for Consumer Protection, which stipulates the prohibition of imprisoning strategic products and not offering them for sale, including electrical appliances, and whoever violates this shall be punished by imprisonment for a period of no less than two years and no more than 5 years, in addition to a fine, as The law obliges any party or entity that offers products to include clearly declared prices, especially the source, price, characteristics and basic characteristics of the product.

And she went on, “The law also stipulates that the supplier is obligated to announce the prices of the goods or services that he offers or provides, clearly, provided that the price includes the taxes imposed by the law or any other financial impositions, in accordance with the controls specified by the executive regulations of this law.”

And she explained that the citizen is still, despite all these warnings, statements and laws, a prey to some dishonorable merchants, the owners of the “best prices”, taking advantage of the lack of any oversight, and practicing the policies of monopoly and the informal economy, as well as trading in the needs of citizens.

And Salama demanded the proper application of the law, the activation of the Consumer Protection Law, and the application of penalties to the money-losing merchants who monopolize electrical appliances and increase their prices on citizens through the “best prices.”

It also called on the Consumer Protection Agency and the concerned agencies to intensify inspection campaigns on exhibitions and sales stores in order to tighten the screws on monopolistic merchants and those who traffic in the needs of citizens, with the need to allocate a hotline to receive complaints about increases in the prices of electrical appliances over the basic prices and to confront the best prices.
