A fire broke out in one of the displacement sites in Ma’rib Governorate, eastern Yemen, this time destroying 6 homes of displaced families, including personal belongings, food and non-food items, and household items.

The Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons Camps (EX.U.IDPs) said in a report that a fire broke out yesterday, Thursday, at Al-Najah site for the displaced in Marib governorate, which resulted in the destruction of 6 homes for displaced families in the camp, and “no casualties or injuries were reported.” mankind”.

The report added that the fire, which broke out at eleven o’clock in the morning due to an electrical short circuit, started in one of the tents, then moved from one to another until it destroyed 6 tents with all their contents, before it was extinguished using water transport vehicles and with the help of the displaced people present in the place.

He pointed out that the fire, which lasted for about an hour, led to the complete burning of one tent, 4 nets and one canteen, and also resulted in the burning of all the families’ belongings, including food and non-food items, kitchen utensils, two bathrooms, 3 water tanks, two air conditioners and one car, and “some of the victims reported that they lost money and documents.” In the fire, due to the lack of immediate response and fire services on site.

The Executive Unit called on humanitarian partners and international and local organizations to respond quickly and provide the affected families’ needs for shelter, food and non-food items, and cash assistance. In addition to the need to take measures to reduce fires in camps for the displaced, and to provide extinguishing equipment in order to mitigate their damage.

The Al-Najah site is one of the large sites for the displaced in the Ma’rib Al-Madina district, as the site receives hundreds of displaced families, and most of the dwellings in it are very old and subject to combustion.

It is noteworthy that this fire is the 62nd in a series of fires that have struck the camps for the displaced in Ma’rib governorate since the beginning of this year 2023, and has so far caused the death of 3 displaced persons, and the injury of 17 others, in addition to the destruction of dozens of homes, and it also comes only a few days after 3 similar fires in IDP sites in the governorate, one of them in the airport camp; The charges took place in 12 homes, another in Al-Haddad camp, and a third in Murad Al-Maili camp.
