Famous artist Tom Hanks’ novel checks out the making of another motion picture masterpiece, or The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpieceand the recently released blockbuster even landed on the New York Times bestseller list despite only being released ten days earlier.
Legendary actor and best-selling author Tom Hanks penned a novel about the making of a star-studded multi-million dollar superhero action movie that explores the comic books that inspired him while depicting the changes in America and American culture since World War II.
The first part of this novel takes place in 1947 when a troubled soldier returning from war meets his talented five-year-old nephew, makes an indelible impression, and then disappears for twenty-three years.
Twenty-three years later, in the year 1970, we return to the nephew who draws comics in Oakland, California, and reconnects with his uncle, and remembers the comic book he saw when he was five years old, drawing a new version with his uncle as a fighter hero in World War II.
-Tom Hanks jumps to the present day as the third part of the novel takes place when a commercially successful director discovers the 1970 comic book and decides to turn it into a contemporary superhero movie.
-The novel is interspersed with three comics featured within the novel, all written by Tom Hanks himself, including the comic book that became the official tie-in to this novel’s “major motion picture masterpiece”.
In his novel, Tom Hanks uses third-person narration as he tells about the elements of making a movie that is being shot during the events, telling the stories of the writer, director, cast, assistant producer, make-up artist, and driver.
The novel follows film director Bill Johnson and his crew as they shoot the superhero blockbuster as the shooting takes place in a town Lone Butte Little California, with an accompanying backstory in which Tom Hanks tells a secondary story about a family living in Lone Butte During World War II this story is relevant because one of the family members eventually writes the picture book that forms the basis of the movie.
Hanks also has a generally gentle and cheerful tone to his writing that makes the book enjoyable, especially in the part where he touches on the relationship between the uncle and his talented nephew who eventually writes the movie, which is being shot with a massive production by director Bill Johnson.
