Is it permissible to fast on Friday? A question that has been searched a lot recently through social media and the famous search site “Google”, about fasting on Friday “alone”, wondering about the ruling on the permissibility of fasting on Friday alone, and whether it is disliked to fast alone or not, especially if it coincides with the day of Arafah or the night of the middle From Shaban, or the day of Ashura.

Ruling on fasting on Friday alone

Fasting on Friday alone is forbidden, i.e. fasting on Friday is not forbidden and it is not forbidden because it is disliked to be forbidden, but the first is that we do not make Friday on its own a fast.

The jurists differed about the ruling on fasting on Friday. Some of them went to the permissibility of singling out Friday for fasting without it being disliked. Fasting on Friday in the month of Sha’ban The jurists relied on the reason for the dislike, so that the Muslim would strengthen his fast on the jobs required of him on Friday, and also so that the Muslim would not exaggerate the veneration of Friday as the Jews exaggerated the veneration of the Sabbath.

And fasting on Friday alone is forbidden from it, forbidding it from the absolute supererogatory fasting during it.

The principle is that it is not permissible to fast on Friday alone, so it is obligatory to fast either on the day before or after it, based on the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, may God be pleased with him, who said: I heard the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, say: (He should not fast any of you on Friday except the day before or after it.” Narrated by al-Bukhari (1849). ) and Muslim (1929), and Muslim narrated in his Sahih on the authority of Abu Hurairah, may God be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: (Do not single out the night of Friday for Standing in prayer among the nights, and do not single out Friday for fasting from among the days, unless it is part of a fast that one of you is fasting.) Fasting 1930).

And in the Sahih on the authority of Juwayriyah bint Al-Harith, may God be pleased with her, that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, entered upon her on Friday while she was He said, “I fasted yesterday.” She said, “No.” He said, “Do you want to fast tomorrow?” She said, “No.” He said, “Iftar.” Abu Ayyub told me that Juwayriyyah spoke to him, so he ordered her to break her fast.) Narrated by Al-Bukhari (Fasting 1850).

The majority of jurists agreed that it is permissible to fast on Friday alone in one case only, and in the case if Friday coincides with the day of “Ashura” or the day of Arafah, then the Muslims fast, because the intention in this case is to fast Ashura and Arafah, not Friday.

Ruling on women fasting on Friday

The Egyptian Dar Al-Iftaa said that he hates fasting on Friday alone, but if fasting on Friday is to spend the days she broke her fast in Ramadan, then it is permissible without hatred, and the hatred of fasting on Friday is true, but it is more likely not to fast on Friday.

--

There is no objection to the woman who had broken her fast in Ramadan making up the days that she did not fast in Ramadan on Friday, and the dislike of fasting on Friday alone, but for those who fasted this day voluntarily, or it was an absolute supererogatory act that was not ordered to make up for it, or it was also not linked to a habit that she used to fast in supererogatory prayers.

Fasting on Friday if it coincides with the middle of Sha’ban or the day of Arafah

All the jurists agreed on the desirability and virtue of fasting on the day of Arafah, and none of them said otherwise. It requires God’s forgiveness – the Almighty – for the servant, as it is desirable on this day to multiply good deeds; such as keenness to perform supererogatory prayers, a lot of remembrance of God Almighty, and alms for the sake of God Almighty, good deeds on this day have great merit.

And Al-Azhar International Center for Fatwa said on its official page, it is permissible to single out the day of Friday for fasting if it coincides with the day of Arafah without hatred, as well as all the days that it is desirable to fast, if it agrees with a usual fast for a Muslim; Imam Ibn Qudamah, may God have mercy on him, says: “It is disliked to single out Friday for fasting, unless that coincides with a fast that he used to fast, such as someone who fasts one day and breaks the fast another day, so his fast coincides with Friday, and it is his habit to fast the first day of the month, or the end of it, or the day of its middle, and so on. that”. [المغني: 3/ 170].

And in a previous fatwa of the Egyptian Dar Al Iftaa, it indicated that it is disliked to fast on Friday alone unless it was for a reason, as if it usually agreed with a Muslim; Like someone who fasts one day and breaks the fast another day, or if it coincides with the day of Arafah, the day of Ashura, the day of mid-Sha`ban, or other supererogatory fasts, or a vow to fast on a day when an absent person will come forward or his sick person will be cured, and it falls on Friday, or if the fast is to fulfill what a Muslim owes from Ramadan. .

And Dar Al-Iftaa affirmed the desirability of fasting on the middle of Sha’ban, because of the great virtue and great blessing it has for the entire Islamic nation, as the Lord Almighty forgives sins on this blessed day, and Muslims in the east and west of the earth fast on this blessed day.

Accordingly: There is no legal objection to singling out Friday for fasting on it if it coincides with the mid-day of Sha’ban.
