It’s official. As revealed for the first time on the Sport Channel, one of the most surprising appointments of recent years in Israeli sports received the final stamp, when Maccabi Haifa announced this evening (Saturday) the signing of Masai Dago as the team’s coach as the successor to Barak Becher, after he won three championships with the team and qualified for the group stage of Champions League.

“I am excited and proud, thank you for the trust,” said Dago, “it is a great challenge to continue to compete for all the titles and lead Maccabi Haifa to further achievements. Hard work awaits us, which we will start tomorrow. I will do everything to make our huge audience happy.”

Dego (37), worked last season as the coach of the Maccabi Haifa youth team and won the championship with it. He began his career as a coach at Hapoel Kfar Saba, he is considered a meteor – first as Sharon Mimer’s assistant, and later he also worked with Eli Cohen and Felix Naim. In the summer of 2017, he first received the keys to the position of head coach of a team that played in the National League, but he left Kfar Saba already in January – after a conflict with the owner, Yitzhak Shum, which came after the sale of Roy Zikri and the integration of Tom Shelah, and this despite the fact that KFS was in place The first in the national league with very attractive football.

In February 2018, he worked for the first time in the Premier League, when he replaced Yuval Naim on the lines of Hapoel Ashkelon. Even there, it was over rather quickly; Dago was unable to save the team, which was relegated to the minor league and left at the end of the season. The following summer, he returned to Leumit – this time when he joined Hapoel Petah Tikva, which he managed to keep in the Mishna league after a year of struggle. After that, he returned to the Premier League again – when Izzy Sharetzky appointed him the municipal coach of Kiryat Shmona, but was fired in October.

Dago has since received two short stints in Laumit – eight months in Hapoel Petah Tikva, and almost a year in Hapoel Acre, which he kept in the league, but in both he was unable to last. Then, came the appointment that may have changed everything – when he was appointed to the youth department of Maccabi Haifa, in May of last year.
