Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel announced on Friday evening his retirement from international football after playing 130 international matches for the Red Devils.
The 34-year-old played his last international match against his counterpart, Croatia, in the group stage of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
The Belgian national team bid farewell to the Qatar World Cup in the first round, in a resounding surprise for the world’s first-ranked players.
Witsel tweeted on the social networking site “Twitter”: “After studying the situation from all directions, I decided with great emotion to retire from international football.”
He continued :”It was a great honor for me to represent my country over the past 15 years, now I want to devote more time to my family”.
Witsel concluded: “Thank you to everyone, thanks to all the coaches, the medical staff, thanks to the fans for being with me during 130 international matches, and good luck to the new generation, I’m sure it will make us live unforgettable historical moments.”

Axel played for many European clubs, most notably: the Belgian Standard de Liege, the German Borussia Dortmund, the Spanish Atletico Madrid, the Portuguese Benfica, the Russian Zenit, and the Chinese Tianjin Quanjian.

The Belgian midfielder scored 12 goals for the Red Devils, the last of which was against Poland in the European Nations League in 2022.
