The Egyptian National Committee for Education, Science and Culture organized a workshop on “sustainable and smart cities” in cooperation with the Arab League Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “ALECSO”, during the period from April 30 to May 3, 2023, in the presence of Mr. Al-Absi, Assistant Secretary-General of the Egyptian National Committee for Education, Science and Culture. Amin Dahmani, Director of Science and Scientific Research, ALECSO representative, Dr. Issam Shahrour, an expert in the field of smart cities and a lecturer at the University of Lille, France, at the headquarters of the National Committee in the 6th of October City.
The workshop was held under the auspices of Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Chairman of the Egyptian National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO – ALECSO – ISESCO).
In his speech, Dr. indicated. Mohamed Samir Hamza, Acting Head of the Cultural Affairs and Missions Sector and Supervisor of the Egyptian National Committee for Education, Science and Culture, indicated that the aim of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for officials from public and private sector institutions, universities and researchers to share the knowledge gained about sustainable and smart cities through research and projects. that have been implemented in this field.
He explained that the workshop axes are: smart systems for water management and energy management, smart mobility, smart cities and their concept, and data collection and processing.
For his part, Amine Dahmani, representative of the ALECSO Organization, conveyed the greetings of Dr. Mohamed Ould Omar, Director General of ALECSO, wished the workshop success and success, thanking the Egyptian National Committee for Education, Science and Culture for the fruitful and constructive cooperation in preparing and arranging this workshop.
He stressed that ALECSO spares no effort in cooperating with member states. To build the capabilities of workers in all areas related to the work of the organization.
--The representative of ALECSO added that the growth of cities all over the world is increasing at rapid rates, stressing that in light of the continued growth of the world’s population, cities are facing a major challenge represented by the increase in their population to a degree that exceeds their ability to absorb this increase.
He noted that the population of some cities around the world is expected to double by 2050.
In his speech, Mr. Al-Absi explained that several years ago, the term sustainable, smart, or green cities appeared after the United Nations declared a strategy for sustainable development.
He pointed out that a smart and sustainable city is an innovative city based on the use of information and communication technologies and other means that improve the quality of life, the efficiency of urban operations and services, as well as the ability to compete while ensuring that the needs of present and future generations are met with regard to economic, social and environmental aspects.
Approximately 25 participants from the following authorities participated in the activities of the workshop: (Ministry of Housing – Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation – Ministry of Environment – Nile University – Cairo University – Helwan University – National Research Center).
